New Delhi. After the crushing defeat in Maharashtra elections, Congress raised questions on the Election Commission and the entire electoral process. Congress also alleged that people’s names have been arbitrarily removed from the voter list. Now on Tuesday the Election Commission of India answered the questions of Congress.
The Election Commission said that the names of voters have neither been added nor removed arbitrarily in Maharashtra. In its reply to Congress, the Election Commission said that it is not right to compare the voting figures at 5 pm with the final voting figures. The increase in turnout from 5 pm to 11:45 pm is normal, it is part of the process of gathering polling data.
The Election Commission stressed that it is impossible to alter the actual voting percentage. This is because the statutory Form 17C giving details of voting is available to the authorized agents of the candidates at the polling booth at the end of the voting.
The Election Commission said that the entire process along with transparency was followed in preparing the voter list in Maharashtra. There was no irregularity in removing the names of voters. The Commission told the Congress that due process has been followed in preparing the voter list, including the participation of Congress representatives.
