A judge in Clark County, where Las Vegas is located, in the United States, was attacked by the defendant in court after denying him parole and sentencing him in an assault case this Wednesday (3).
A video of the session shows the moment in which the defender asked Judge Mary Kay Holthus for probation for the defendant, Deobra Redden, 30, saying that it was “worth the risk” and that the client had undergone psychiatric treatment — court records show that he underwent evaluation and would be ready to stand trial, according to the local press.
The judge appreciates the request, but denies it and says she thinks “it’s time for him to [o réu] taste something else, I can’t ignore this history.” According to the local press, he had already been convicted of three crimes since 2015.
At this moment, Redden curses Holthus, runs towards the judge’s table and jumps over the bench aiming for her neck. A court employee who was next to her tries to restrain the attacker and is helped by security guards and others present. The man hits those involved and also receives punches when being restrained.
A court spokeswoman said Holthus “sustained some injuries” and is “being monitored.” A police officer was also injured in the attack and was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
“We are reviewing all of our protocols and will do whatever is necessary to protect the judiciary, the public and our employees,” the spokeswoman said.
