DeskCyclone Remal has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm and is expected to make landfall between Sagar Island in West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh around midnight on Sunday. Cyclone Remal, formed in the Bay of Bengal, will turn into a storm in the next 6 hours.
According to IMD scientist Somnath Dutta, in the last 6 hours, Cyclone Remal is moving northwards in the Bay of Bengal at a speed of 13 km/hour. After 12 o’clock on Sunday night, it will landfall between Sagar Island in Bangladesh and West Bengal and Khepupara in Bangladesh. During this time, the winds will blow at a speed of about 135 km per hour.
In view of the change in weather due to Cyclone Remal, Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Airport has been closed from 12 noon on Sunday to 9 am on Monday. Due to this, 394 flights have been cancelled. East and South East Railways have also cancelled some trains passing through South and North 24 Parganas and East Medinipur districts as a precautionary measure. Heavy rain has started in East Medinipur due to Cyclone Remal. Rain has started in Gosaba and Sundarban of South 24 Parganas district. The water level in the Bakkhali river has also increased.
Cyclone Remal will have a greater impact on the coastal districts of East Medinipur, Sundarbans, Tripura and Odisha in West Bengal. Therefore, NDRF teams are taking the residents and tourists living in these areas to safer places. This is the first pre-monsoon cyclone to form in the Bay of Bengal this season.
