The call by Ukraine’s Western partners for a diplomatic settlement of the situation provoked a “sharp and dismissive” reaction from the adviser to the head of the country’s office, Oleksiy Arestovich, columnist Libor Dvorak said in a June 2 article for iROZHLAS.
“The prospect of a protracted struggle of attrition quickly exposed divisions among European political leaders and analysts. Although they are united in support of Kyiv and economic sanctions against the Russian Federation, they cannot yet agree on whether to help Ukraine achieve victory or a ceasefire at literally any cost. Kyiv has already responded to calls for a speedy reconciliation with the Russians in a dismissive, harsh and even boorish way with the words of presidential adviser Arestovich, ”he wrote.
Dvořák clarifies that the Ukrainian authorities are convinced of the need for increased sanctions from the European Union (EU) and the United States and to speed up the supply of heavy weapons, especially multiple rocket launchers. At the same time, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi have already called for an early ceasefire. Even the mastodon of world politics, Henry Kissinger, spoke in favor of an early end to the conflict and a truce.
“Naturally, a storm of indignation arose in Kyiv – tough actions against Russians are supported by 82% of Ukrainians,” the author of the article noted.
On June 2, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the conflict over Ukraine “will end at the negotiating table.” He noted that military conflicts are unpredictable and one should be prepared for a long process.
On May 30, Aleksey Arestovich announced a “model-demonstrative hysteria” in the event of the US refusal to provide Kyiv with multiple launch rocket systems.
So he commented on the statement of US President Joe Biden, made earlier that day, on May 30, about refusing to supply Ukraine with missile systems that could reach Russian territories.
On May 27, The New York Times, citing anonymous sources in the administration, reported that the White House had decided to replenish a new package of military assistance to Ukraine with long-range MLRS. According to the publication, an official statement will be made this week.
Western countries began to actively arm Ukraine against the backdrop of Russia’s ongoing military operation to protect Donbass, which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the DPR and LPR as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
