David Crosby, Legendary Guitarist For The Byrds, Dies At 81

One of the most influential singers of the 1960s and 1970s, david crosby, passed away this Thursday, January 19, according to US media reports. With his bandmates Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke, Crosby laid the foundation for Los Angeles folk-rock during the ’60s in the Byrds.

Who was David Crosby?

Born on August 14, 1941 in California, David Crosby joined The Byrds in 1964. Soon, the combo became one of the great bands on the folk-rock scene after experiencing a great reception with their version of “Mr. Tambourine Man” by Bob Dylan.

Although in the first years of the band the main songwriter was Gene Clark, soon the creative tasks would fall to Crosby and company when the aforementioned artist left the group. It was thus that he honed his skills as a lyricist beyond just playing the guitar.

Shortly after his departure from the band in 1967, he would find success with a new project called Crosby, Stills & Nash, led by Stephen Stills and the British Graham Nash in what was considered one of the first supergroups of its day. Over the years, the project added fellow legendary Neil Young, adding the latter’s last name to the band name.

He also had an important solo career and formed another group called CPR, this one with his son James Raymond and Jeff Pevar.
