New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi has filed a case in the Supreme Court seeking an order to complete the mayoral election of Delhi Corporation within the time limit.
Elections were held last December for a total of 250 seats in the Delhi Corporation. In this, AAP won 134, BJP 104, Congress 9 and independents 3.
On behalf of Aam Aadmi Party, Shelly Obera was announced for the post of Mayor and Ale Mohammad Iqbal for the post of Deputy Mayor. Even though the Aam Aadmi Party has won the majority in the elections, the BJP has also announced its mayoral and deputy mayor candidates.
Subsequently, the new board meeting was held on January 6. The Aam Aadmi Party protested that the 10 nominated members appointed by the Lt. Governor should take office first. The meeting was adjourned due to the commotion that ensued.
Following this, the Delhi Cabinet meeting resumed last Tuesday morning.
In this, 10 nominated members were first sworn in amid opposition from Aam Aadmi Party. Then the elected members were sworn in.
Hot Debate: Subsequently, a heated argument broke out between BJP and Aam Aadmi Party members. Due to this, the meeting was adjourned due to chaos in the House.
Meanwhile, Aam Aadmi Party’s mayoral candidate Shelly Oberoi has filed a case in the Supreme Court seeking an order to complete the mayoral election of Delhi Corporation within the time limit. The petition is expected to come up for hearing today.
The Aam Aadmi Party had already accused the BJP of planning and disrupting the proceedings. Meanwhile, Delhi BJP Spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapur said yesterday, “Due to the violence of the Aam Aadmi Party members, the mayoral election could not be held in both the meetings. Arvind Kejriwal does not want to be elected as Delhi Mayor. This is because Kejriwal fears that the Mayor will become more popular than him,” he said.
Governor Call: There is a conflict between the Kejriwal government and the lieutenant governor over various issues, including the sending of government school teachers to Finland for training. Meanwhile, Governor VK Saxena has invited Chief Minister Kejriwal to come and meet him on Friday (today) along with Cabinet Ministers and 10 Aam Aadmi Party MLAs.
