In this case, the US embassy has decided to approve a large number of visas for Indians this year.
US visas are issued in many categories like work, study, tourism, business. Currently the waiting period for a work visa is 60 – 280 days and for a tourist visa the waiting period is one and a half years. In this case, the US has decided to speed up the visa approval process by appointing additional officers and opening consular offices on Saturdays.
John Ballard, Chief of the US Embassy in Mumbai, said:
The US Embassy in India approved 8 lakh visas last year. Of these, only 1.25 lakhs are for educational visas. We plan to approve more visas this year. Similarly, the waiting period for first-time B1, B2 tourist and professional travel visa applicants is reduced.
Recently we have issued 2.5 lakh B1 and B2 visas in India. Now people can send application through email to renew visa. We are committed to reducing visa waiting times to simplify the process of traveling to the US.
