The talks between Russia and the United States on the issue of security guarantees ended on January 10 in Geneva in 7.5 hours. The Russian side was represented by an interdepartmental delegation of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
The meeting was held in a closed format on the territory of the American permanent mission at the UN office. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov and US First Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman, who are heading the Russian and American negotiating delegations, did not shake hands before the meeting. They took a protocol photo in front of the flags of their countries.
After the conversation, Ryabkov compared the nature of the negotiations with the American side with the dialogue from the 1988 American crime fighter Red Heat.
“As far as evidence goes, it reminds me of stills from a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger. [«Красная жара»], where one of the heroes wondered “what is your evidence,” he said, commenting on the statement of the first US Undersecretary of State Wendy Sherman about the need for the Russian Federation to demonstrate evidence that Moscow is not going to escalate the situation in relations with Washington.
The diplomat also noted that the conversation was “difficult, long, very professional, deep and specific. Without trying to embellish something, avoid sharp corners. “
The deputy minister added that Moscow hopes that NATO within the next two days will be able to understand the danger of an impasse for the dialogue on security guarantees and will take a step towards the Russian proposals.
Earlier Ryabkov noted that the United States wants to restore the work of the Russia-NATO Council on conditions unacceptable for the Russian side. According to him, we are talking about the agenda in which there is an emphasis on the so-called “Russian aggression” in Ukraine.
A meeting of the Russia-NATO Council is scheduled for January 12, and a day later, on January 13, a multilateral meeting is to take place at the OSCE platform.
