Chennai: Four years ago on this day, former Indian cricket team captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni played his last international cricket match.
That match was a pain for every one of Dhoni’s fans. But it was one of Dhoni’s innings that fans will never forget. Dhoni’s last international match was the semi-final against New Zealand in the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup series.
India chased down the target of 240 runs to win. Due to rain, the tournament was held over two days. However, India stumbled by losing six wickets for 92 runs. Dhoni formed a partnership of 116 runs with Jadeja who came later. Almost the Indian team went close to the victory line and lost.
Dhoni scored 50 runs in 72 balls and was run out. The distance between his bat and the crease is just a few centimeters. However, Dhoni was unable to overcome that on the day. That moment broke the hearts of thousands of fans. Surely no one would have expected that this would be Dhoni’s last international match. Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket in 2020. He started his international cricket career with a run out and ended it there.
Dhoni has played 538 international matches in all formats of cricket including Test, ODI and T20. With that he has scored 17,266 runs. The Indian team has won T20 World Cup, ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy under his leadership. He is currently leading the Chennai Super Kings team.
