What you need to know:
For months, Republicans and Democrats have been in a tug-of-war over a bill on border security and immigration.
Ah, geez. This January 26, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, published a statement that is causing something to talk about: if a bipartisan law is approved in Congress on border security, he would consider closing the border with Mexico on an emergency basis.
But what do you mean by closing the border? What law are you talking about? What are the negotiations that you want to push behind?
Negotiations on security on the United States border with Mexico
“What has been negotiated would be – if it becomes law – the toughest and fairest set of reforms to secure the border that we have ever had in our country. It would give me, as president, new emergency authority to close the border when it becomes overwhelmed. And if I had that authority, I would use it the day I sign the bill“reads the statement.
But what does it refer to? According to US Customs and Border Protection, during fiscal year 2023 the Border Patrol arrested at least 3 million migrants on the border with Mexico. And the trend is increasing.
The numbers indicate that during Donald Trump’s presidency the peak of arrests reached 852 thousand people in 2019. That is why Republicans accuse that Biden increased the migrant crisis at the border by loosening Trump’s restrictions.
It cannot be denied that migration is one of the main issues on the table in the approaching presidential elections. The thing is that Republicans and Democrats have different visions and projects… and time is running out before the votes.
For example, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has declared that Joe Biden needs to return Trump’s policies. He has even asked the Senate (which is led by Democrats) to pass a bill to end the end of asylum at the border.
The one known as HR 2 that has not yet reached the Senate, where it would run into the Democrats. The White House, of course, would not approve this project and would veto it.
What are we talking about? Well, migrants are prohibited from seeking asylum in the United States if they pass through another country on the route. It would also give the American Secretary of National Security authority to suspend the entry of migrants.
And of course, it requires the construction of at least a thousand 400 kilometers of wall, would end parole programs, etc.
On the other side of the coin, the Democrats’ project (promoted by Biden) calls for billions of dollars to add more agents to the Border Patrol, new asylum agents, new teams of judges, etc. Not to stop them, but to manage their arrival in a better way.
And there they are, in the push and pull. For months, a bipartisan group (Republicans and Democrats) have been negotiating a possible agreement that includes aid to Ukraine (which is on hold) with border security with Mexico.
The idea is to be able to reach an agreement in the middle of the positions to implement a plan. Joe Biden refers to this agreement, which “has to be approved now.”
“For all those demanding stricter border control, this is the way to do it. If you’re serious about the border crisis, pass a bipartisan bill and I’ll sign it“, reads from the White House as a push for this to be approved, at least only from the Senate as a first step.
And why is there a rush? Well, Donald Trump’s position is that Republicans should not negotiate or give in to a project that does not contemplate the definitive closure of asylum applications in the United States.
