San Francisco. A Waymo robotaxi in autonomous mode hit a dog in San Francisco last month, killing it. As TechCrunch reports, the report filed with the California Department of Motor Vehicles states that it appears there was no way to prevent the incident.
According to the report, the self-driving Jaguar I-Pace car was slowing on Toland Street near Waymo’s depot. During this a dog came on the road.
The car was in autonomous mode at the time of the incident although the human safety operator was seated on the driver’s seat. The dog was visible to the car’s autonomous systems but not to the human operator. The company claims that despite this, there were many reasons including the speed and trajectory of the dog, due to which the accident could not be avoided.
“On May 21, a dog came in front of one of our vehicles with an autonomous specialist in the driver’s seat in San Francisco and unfortunately had a collision,” the company said. The investigation is ongoing, although preliminary investigations have revealed that the system correctly identified the dog, which came running suddenly from behind the parked vehicle, but was not able to avoid the incident.
According to a Waymo spokesperson, neither the safety operator nor the autonomous system applied the brakes to prevent the accident.(IANS)
