The chairman of Qatar Tourism said that Doha has experienced unprecedented growth in tourism as a result of Doha hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2022 for the first time. Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior of Qatar, and others participated in the official announcement ceremony of ‘Doha, Arab Tourism Capital 2023’ held on Saturday on the occasion of Arab Tourism Day. Al Baker thanked the Arab Tourist Organization for awarding Doha this designation in recognition of its serious efforts towards the development and growth of its tourism industry.

Qatar Airways has been named “Airline of the Year” seven times by Skytrax, an international air transport rating organization. Hamad International Airport has also been selected as the ‘World’s Best Airport 2022’ by Skytrax Airport for the second consecutive year. He noted that Qatar has all the necessary features to become a global hub for tourism. Qatar has enough infrastructure to provide better facilities to tourists like Doha Metro, safe and reasonably priced taxis and other means of transport. Infrastructure is key as Qatar has invested heavily in areas such as renowned hotels, tourist facilities, and various sites and attractions across the country that combine heritage with modernity. But he said there is more to be done.

Meanwhile, Bandar bin Fahd Al Fuhaid, President of the Arab Tourism Organization, said that Doha, which was selected as the capital of Arab tourism this year, is the most deserving of that recognition. He said the Arab world has invested $320 billion in the tourism industry and expects 350 million tourists to reach the Arab region by 2030. Qatar has topped this year’s Numbio Crime Index for the safest country in the world. Qatar managed to achieve this feat for the fifth year in a row. Qatar plans to increase the tourism sector’s contribution to gross domestic product (GDP) by 12 percent by 2030 as part of its strategy to cement its position as a top international travel destination by attracting six million visitors annually.
The Gulf nation has also rapidly developed infrastructure, including state-of-the-art highways, a metro system, universities, the Museum of Islamic Art and the stunning National Museum of Qatar. The recognition for Qatar comes with more than 100 brand new hotels opening in and around the city, including the Katara Tower’s U-shaped Fairmont and Raffles Doha, as well as two Waldorf Astoria hotels.
