Beijing: Strong earthquake in China. 46 people are reported to have died in the earthquake in the southwest region. International media reported that several houses were damaged and medical connections were disrupted.
The epicenter of the earthquake was 43km away in Kangding city of Sichuan province. A magnitude of 6.6 was recorded on the Richter scale. Buildings were damaged in the capital city of Chengdu. According to international media, local residents said that strong vibrations were felt inside the house and household appliances fell down.
There are reports that roads leading into the main city have been damaged and communication systems have been disrupted. Several aftershocks were also felt. Less than an hour after the first earthquake, a small earthquake with a magnitude of 4.6 was felt in eastern Tibet. Hundreds of rescue workers have reached the earthquake affected area. The local administration has stated that steps have been taken to provide immediate assistance to the people in the earthquake affected area. In 2008, a magnitude 8.0 earthquake hit Sichuan province. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives that day.
