The Easter morning of the Sević family from Niš, Serbia, which hosted the Anatolia team on the most joyous Christian holiday, began with washing in the water in which the “guardian” egg, sardine and basil had been left overnight, which is believed to bring good health to the family. and happiness. While the cake is being baked, the spouses Maja and Boban beat each other with eggs, toast and start the day during which they will visit their loved ones.
There are painted eggs on the table, and the “guardian”, the red and first painted egg, has a separate stand where it will remain until Good Friday of the following year. According to belief, it will protect the house and household members from misfortune and evil.
Maja Sević dyed some eggs with purchased colors and decorated them with stickers, and some in onions, i.e. onion skins, just like her grandmothers used to do when she was a child.
“We run an association for the preservation of tradition, so we respect tradition and old customs in our home as well. Last year we had a full house, but then the son got married and the daughter got married, so now we are alone. But, after breakfast, we go on visits, first to our granddaughter Ksenia, who was born ten days ago,” says Maja.
Baby Ksenija will receive her first “Easter nest” from her grandparents.
“It is a tradition of the Moravian region. The nest is made of dough, and there is an egg in the middle. That’s what our grandmothers gave to our children, and we continued that custom. For lunch, we will set a festive table with our specialties”, says Maja.
Her husband Boban says that holidays like Easter are a time when we all turn to family and close friends.
“This is the day of the year when we can sit in peace, when there is no business race and rush. The phones don’t ring because of work, but only because of Easter greetings to those closest to us – family, relatives and friends,” says Boban.
The Serbian Orthodox Church calls Easter the holiday of holidays. It is a day celebrated as the central event of Christ’s victory over death, and his resurrection is considered the foundation of Christianity.
