EC said- We cannot say anything in the name of INDIA alliance. We only have the right to hold elections and register alliances of political parties.
The Election Commission (EC) on Monday (30 October) said that it cannot regulate the alliance of parties. This is not within their power under the Representation of the People Act 1951 of the Constitution.
EC said this in response to the notice given by Delhi High Court on August 4 regarding the name of INDIA (Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance).
He said- We cannot say anything in the name of INDIA alliance. We only have the right to hold elections and register alliances of political parties.

The name INDIA was first suggested by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the alliance of 26 parties.
A petition was filed three months ago regarding the name INDIA
Three months ago, on August 3, businessman Girish Bhardwaj had filed a petition in the Delhi High Court. He said that the name of the opposition alliance should be changed. He has used the name INDIA for benefit in 2024 elections.
He had also told the court that on July 19, an appeal was made to the Election Commission to take action against this name, but no action was taken. On this, the bench of Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Amit Mahajan had said that the EC has not given any reply till now, hence the complaint has reached the court. It is important to hear this.
26 parties in INDIA
26 opposition parties had held a meeting in Bengaluru on July 18. The name INDIA for the alliance was first suggested by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. However, he wanted Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal to first get it approved by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

Kharge had said- BJP has destroyed democracy. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had said that BJP has destroyed all the agencies of democracy like ED, CBI etc. We have political differences, but we have come together to save the country. Our aim is to expose the failures of the government. I am happy that Rahul, Mamta all agree. Will fight together in 2024 and bring great results.
