The Congress Party was started on December 28, 1885 and held its first meeting in Mumbai. The first leader of the Congress party was lawyer Umesh Chandra Banerjee. Today marks the 137th anniversary of the founding of the Congress Party.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi MP, General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi, senior leaders and many others were present. After hoisting the Congress party flag at the event Sonia Gandhi Talking to volunteers:
“Election defeat, victory, ups and downs. It is inevitable. But the dedicated service to the people is consistent. The policies and ideologies developed by the Congress party will never compromise.
For many decades, it has faced various challenges and has always struggled with challenges. Today we re-dedicate ourselves to the ambitions, values and principles of our organization, which were designed, guided and inspired by some of the greatest, noblest and most selfless Indians of the 20th century.
Hateful and misguided separatist ideologies that have no role to play in our freedom struggle are now wreaking havoc on the secular fabric of our society.
When they do not deserve a place in history, they edit history to show that they have a role to play. Our great parliamentary democracy is being deliberately damaged.
The Congress party will fight with these destructive forces. Let there be no doubt in our firm resolve. We will never compromise on our basic beliefs that are part of our sacred tradition. “
