New Delhi. Tesla driven by Elon Musk may soon run on Indian roads. The central government is expediting the process of providing all necessary approvals from the concerned departments for its entry in the country by January 2024.
According to reports, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) held a meeting with top officials on Monday to review the upcoming phase of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing in the country, including Tesla’s investment proposal.
There was a meeting between Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to America in June. Following this, the Union ministries of commerce and industry, heavy industries and electronics and information technology are engaged in discussions about Tesla’s plans in India.
A report in September said that Tesla is planning to build a factory for battery storage in India and has also sent a proposal for the same to the government.
The electric car maker proposed supporting the country’s battery storage capacity with its “PowerWall” during recent meetings.
Musk is also aiming to build a Tesla supply system in India.
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal had said the EV major plans to buy automobile parts worth up to $1.9 billion from India this year.
The minister said that last year Tesla had already purchased components worth $1 billion from India and this year their target is $1.7-1.9 billion.
