Erdogan: Turkiye will meet almost 30 percent of annual needs for natural gas from Black Sea reserves

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that the full exploitation capacity of Black Sea gas will replace almost 30 percent of Turkey’s total needs, reports Anadolia.

Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the Black Sea natural gas field, Erdogan said that Turkey “is taking a historic step towards energy independence”.

As he said, while elsewhere in the world it takes six to seven years to use gas after finding it, his country has established the pace at which it was possible to do it in less than three years.

“When we reach full capacity, in this way we will be able to meet almost 30 percent of our country’s annual needs. In the first stage, we will extract 10 million cubic meters of natural gas per day from the Sakarya Black Sea field, while with other wells that number will reach 40 million,” he said. is Erdogan.

Erdogan went on to say that the Black Sea natural gas will not only significantly reduce his country’s dependence on foreign natural gas, but will also “make Filyos and Zonguldak an important energy hub.”

The Turkish president said that citizens will have free gas for one year for use in primary household needs, primarily in the kitchen.

In August 2020, 320 billion cubic meters of natural gas was discovered in the Tuna-1 well in the Sakarya gas field in the Black Sea, making it the largest discovery of that energy in the history of Turkey.

With an additional 85 billion cubic meters discovered in October 2020, the total amount of discovered gas reserves was 405 billion cubic meters.

After the discovery of 135 billion cubic meters in the Amasra-1 well in June 2021, Black Sea gas reserves amounted to 540 billion cubic meters.

Another 58 billion cubic meters of gas was found in December 2022 in the Caycuma-1 well in the southwestern part of the Black Sea.

An independent estimate showed that Turkey’s gas reserves in the Black Sea will reach 710 billion cubic meters, with a market value of about a trillion dollars.
