The fraud is taking advantage of the fact that the government pays the expenses of the native citizens when they undergo treatment abroad. The investigation revealed that 67 lakh dinars were stolen by creating fake treatment bills related to 1,942 patients. The court gave its verdict in the absence of the accused.
A health ministry official was found to have bought a building worth 70,000 dinars and travel tickets worth 44,000 dinars by complicity in the fraud.
The country is taking strong measures against rampant corruption. A former Kuwaiti minister and two top officials were recently sentenced to seven years in prison in a corruption case. Mubarak Alarov, who was the Minister of Social Affairs from December 2021 to August 2022, was punished. The court verdict was in November in the case of illegally earning money through business contracts. Former under secretary and former head of the Federation of Cooperative Societies are among the top officials convicted.
An Egyptian who was a financial manager in the Kuwait Teachers Association was sentenced to 15 years in prison last October in a case of financial evasion. The embezzlement was done by illegally increasing his own salary several times and including fake employees in the payroll.
In October, the Supreme Court upheld the imprisonment and dismissal of seven former judges for accepting bribes in a case involving an Iranian businessman. The court sentenced the judges to imprisonment from seven years to fifteen years. The court also ordered the confiscation of the cars they received as bribes.
A Kuwaiti criminal court has recently convicted a government official and his accomplice, an Iranian expatriate, in a case of false attendance and embezzlement.
