Expatriate remittances should be taxed; Bahten MPs with instructions

Bahrain: MPs of Bahrain are on the scene with the suggestion that tax should be imposed on the money sent by expatriates. A draft bill related to this was presented in Parliament by a few MPs. In the proposal presented by AP, it is said that if 200 dinars are sent home, one percent tax should be imposed. If sending between 201 and 400 dinars, two percent tax should be imposed. The proposal says that if the money is sent above 400 dinars, a tax of three percent should be levied.

Expatriate remittances are taxed if they are remitted through an authorized financial institution. The National Revenue Bureau collects tax money from financial institutions. The proposal says that contracts related to investment protection, transfer of capital etc. should be exempted. It is estimated that one billion dinars are remitted by expatriates from Bahrain a year.
