A gray color Bentley Mulsanne car was stolen from a wealthy residential area in London. The owner of the car filed a complaint with the police. The police reached the spot but could not locate it. The management of Bentley was contacted. They said that the luxury cars manufactured by them have automatic location tracking facility.. They said that the said car was parked in a house in the Defense Housing Authority (DHA) area of Karachi.
With this, London officials contacted Collectorate of Customs Enforcement (CCE) officials in Pakistan. The details of the car were sent to them. Based on the information received from London, the CCE officials who went to the DHA area found that the car was parked in the parking lot of an apartment.
The authorities detained and interrogated the owner of the car, Jameel Shafi, and another person named Naveed Bilwani was also arrested with him. Jamil did not have any documents related to the car. But a Pakistani number plate was seen on the car. Jameel told the authorities that the person who sold him the car said that he would give all the documents.
In the process of bringing the car to Pakistan, it was found that taxes of more than Rs.3 crores had been evaded. Officials said that the car was brought without the permission of the Ministry of External Affairs and without a no-objection letter from the customs officials. Customs officials believe that the luxury car was brought to Karachi with fake documents.
After bringing the car to Karachi port, it was sold to Jameel. The person assured Jameel that he would provide all the documents from the concerned authorities. But CCE officials said that without completing the legal formalities, they were illegally registered with the help of Sindh Excise officials.
As the car’s locks were not available, the customs officials loaded the car into another vehicle and took it to their depot. Authorities also seized another car from the person who bought the Bentley car.
