In the past they were concealed with thick layers of make-up, nowadays they are completely in: freckles. And those who do not have them, let them temporarily (or even permanently) – see S10, who convincingly sang himself to the Eurovision final in Turin last night.
If you zoom in a bit on S10’s face, you can see them clearly and everywhere. Fake freckles on her nose, on her cheeks, on her forehead. ,,Very nice”, thinks make-up artist Wendy van de Kerkhof (Van de Kerkhof Make-up & Hairstyling) but – if it is up to her – more for the stage than for everyday life. “I think it’s a funny trend, but something for the stars, not for everyone.”
Her point: the fake freckles look very casual and ‘easy’, but are quite difficult to apply in practice. ,,Of course you want it to look very natural, but to achieve that effect you have to be very careful. If you don’t, they will become spots or streaks.”
Her tip: don’t apply the fake freckles with an eye pencil, but with eyebrow powder or eye shadow. ,,You have to use a very fine brush with a sharp point and carefully apply dots.” A black color is much too hard for the face; brown or brownish red is better. “Then you get a natural result.”
Paradoxical
Tattoo artist Lisa Tiele of Dingo Tattoo knows all about the freckle hype: she regularly puts fake freckles. “I think it’s like having straight and curly hair. People who have straight hair want to curl and vice versa. If you have freckles, you may not like them at all and if you don’t, you think they’re beautiful and cute.”
What applies to all tattoos applies to the freckle tattoo: it is basically forever. “So you have to be sure of yourself: after all, it’s in your face.” Tiele also uses brown or brown-red shades, “all in consultation with the customer”.
Salient, but also somewhat paradoxical: with a freckle tattoo you have to be extra careful in the sun. “The first few weeks after getting the tattoo you are not allowed in the sun anyway. After that, you should always apply a high factor.”
Summer
You would rather not put a freckle tattoo in the summer. “You would rather not put it on a tanned skin because – if you become a bit whiter in the winter – it might stand out too much.” Putting freckles costs about two hundred euros.
