During the meeting, Mamata Banerjee first nominated Sharad Pawar as the joint opposition candidate. Most of the candidates suggested Pawar’s name. However, he politely declined the offer. Pawar is reported to have said that he still intends to continue in active politics. This put an end to speculations that Sharad Pawar would be in the ring as the joint opposition candidate so far.
Opposition parties have stated they will not run in the by-elections on June 21. In the meantime it seems he has decided to meet again. Prior to that, a team of several leaders will hold consultations.
With Sharad Pawar refusing to run for the presidency, the name of Gopal Krishna Gandhi, the former governor of Bengal nominated by the Left parties, has come under scrutiny. The name of Farooq Abdullah, the head of the National Conference, has also become a hot topic in political circles.
‘All opposition parties are invited to this meeting. Some parties attended. I asked for a consensus on the presidential candidate. I proposed the name Sharad Pawar. All the oppositions unanimously proposed his name. But, he was not interested in the competition. We will meet again and discuss. All the opposition parties are united. We will also consult with other parties, ”said Mamata Banerjee.
This is the presidential election schedule.
