The amount of food waste in the country is now high. This is a big concern. It is estimated that about 600 crores worth of food is wasted in the country every year. It cannot continue like this. According to the Food Sustainability Index 2020, it is reported that 224 kg of food is wasted per person per year in the country, compared to other countries (Europe and North America), the level of food waste in the UAE is higher. A solution should be found for this. As a part of this, it has been decided to charge a fine to those who waste food.
The hospitality of the UAE is all about giving and receiving food. Thousands of people are struggling for water and food in different parts of the world. The Niama initiative has noted the growing concern over food wastage in many parts of the world. Many people are dying of starvation in the world. There are many people in the world who are suffering from hunger, thirst and malnutrition. The idea put forward by Nima is that we should always uphold humanity as a priority.
The cause of food wastage will be assessed in the distribution chain from farm to market. Hotels, restaurants, homes, supermarkets should all be made aware of this. But often we can’t. We fail at it.
Then homes are another place where food is wasted. 60 percent of food waste is thrown out of homes. The first step is to educate people about food wastage. It is the mindset of the people that needs to be changed. Urgent efforts should be made for it. That is why UAE has decided to come up with such a law.
Meanwhile, the UAE aims to reduce food waste by 50 percent by 2030. Climate Change and Environment Minister Maryam bint Mohammed Almheri presented the project at the fourth national dialogue on food security. Organized by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in collaboration with the National Food Loss and Waste Initiative, the theme of this initiative is ‘A Call for Change’. It aims to reduce food waste in the UAE.
