Uruguayan football club Nacional Montevideo announced yesterday, Tuesday, the death of its player Juan Izquierdo at the age of 27, a few days after his health collapsed during a match in the Copa Libertadores Championship in Brazil.
The club announced, citing doctors who were treating him at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil, that the cause of death was cardiac and respiratory arrest due to an irregular heartbeat. Izquierdo died at 9:38 p.m. on Tuesday (00:38 a.m. Wednesday GMT).
The defender collapsed in the 84th minute of the second leg of the last-16 tie against Sao Paulo last Thursday.
In a post on the social media platform X, Nacional described Izquierdo’s death as a “huge loss.”
Alejandro Dominguez, president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL), expressed his condolences to Izquierdo’s club and the player’s family. “South American football is in mourning,” he said.
Izquierdo made his first appearance in the Uruguayan Primera Division with Atletico Cerro in 2018, and moved to Nacional in 2022, playing 33 matches and scoring two goals.
Sao Paulo won the match that took place last Thursday 2/0, and qualified for the quarter-finals of the Copa Libertadores.
