Rehearsal for the Republic Day parade was conducted on the duty path on Wednesday (January 10) morning.
In the program to be held on Republic Day in Delhi, only women policemen will participate in the parade from Delhi Police. A total of 194 women head constables and women constables will participate in the marching squad. They will be led by IPS officer Shweta K. Sugthan. Delhi Police official told on Tuesday (January 9) that this decision has been taken to promote gender equality and women empowerment.
According to news agency ANI, the police officer said that this year the Delhi Police band will be led by woman constable Ruyaganuo Kense. There are a total of 135 constables in this band. Till last year, the band was being led by male officers, but from this year this responsibility has also been handed over to female officers.
Last year, for the first time, a women’s pipe band from Delhi Police had participated on the occasion of Republic Day. This band was led by Inspector Rajendra Singh. The women’s pipe band squad included 32 constables.
More than 80% women from North East states in the marching squad
Delhi Police officer said- More than 80% of the women in the marching squad are from North East states. We believe that the people of North Eastern states should also get equal opportunities like the rest of the country. Therefore, even at the time of recruitment, this policy is adopted that police recruitment must be done from 8 states of North East.
Since independence, Delhi Police has been declared the best marching squad 15 times. Last time in 2021, Delhi Police got the title of Best Marching Squad. At that time, Delhi Police officers marched on the theme of peace service and justice.

The decision to increase participation of women in the Republic Day Parade was taken in the ‘de-briefing meeting’ held on February 7. The meeting, chaired by Defense Secretary Giridhar Armane, was attended by senior representatives of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Home Ministry, Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry, Culture Ministry and Education Ministry.
After deliberations, it was decided that women participants will be included in the contingents (marching and bands), tableaux and other performances during the parade on the duty line in the Republic Day Parade 2024. The Defense Ministry had also sent a letter in this regard in March.
