New Delhi: Former Law Minister and Senior Advocate Shanti Bhushan (97) passed away yesterday.
Shanti Bhushan, who served as a senior advocate in the Supreme Court, was an active member of the Congress Party and the Janata Party. He served as Law Minister in Morarji Desai’s cabinet from 1977 to 1979. It was when he was the Law Minister that the 44th Amendment to the Constitution was tabled. While working as a lawyer and as a minister, he always stood for truth. He and his son, prominent lawyer Prashant Bhushan, fought for accountability and transparency in the judiciary. He joined BJP in 1980. He left the party after 6 years. He was also a founding member of the Aam Aadmi Party.
Shanti Bhushan, who had been ill for some time, passed away yesterday at his home in Delhi. Condoling his death, Prime Minister Modi said, ‘Santi Bhushan’s contribution to the judiciary will always be remembered’. Law Minister Kiran Rijiju also condoled the death of Shanti Bhushan.
