– It is known that the coach is held accountable for the results and the level of the team. The performance of the Polish national team was not optimistic. And as a result, Santos lost his position, which doesn’t surprise me – said Tomasz Wałdoch, who has been living in Germany for years.
In his opinion, there are many elements in the coach’s work that then influence the team’s playing style.
– All planning, organization, observing matches, selection. Not only training under the supervision of a trainer. I watched the last two matches of the national team against the Faroe Islands (2:0) and Albania (0:2). They didn’t fill me with any great optimism. There are no easy matches, no easy opponents, but it seemed that at this stage of qualifying the team would have more points. This did not happen and the consequence – as we see – is the dismissal of coach Santos – noted the former defender of Górnik Zabrze, VfL Bochum and Schalke 04 Gelsenkirchen.

– I think we have some experience with foreign coaches who have recently been with the national team and their work was not very positive. That’s why I support a Polish coach who knows the environment and the playerseven though many of them play abroad, they know the mentality, culture and situation in Polish clubs – said Wałdoch.
“You can choose, there are people in the Polish Football Association for that. The final decision will be made by the president, let’s wait for it. The coach who will come may have +new faces+ in the squad, he will make slight changes, but mainly the national team will consist of the same players as so far,” he said.
He emphasized that there must be “chemistry” in every team.
“Judging by the style and results of the last matches of the team, it was obvious that it was not there. The atmosphere within the team is very important. Of course, the results also influence it. This is also the case at the club level, regardless of the level at which you play. When the team is not doing well, people are automatically looking for those to blame. No one wants to feel guilty, they are looking for factors influencing the defeats, there are disagreements. The coach’s trick is to put it all together and lead in the right direction,” said the 74-time representative of the country.
