In Russia, scammers have become more active, opening the personal accounts of cellular subscribers, sources close to the two operators told Izvestia. According to one of them, until the end of April, such incidents were isolated, and now they count in the hundreds every week.
“Intruders call subscribers under the guise of an operator’s customer support service. They indicate various reasons for the call: a proposal to change the tariff plan, temporary blocking of the card, activation of options, discounts, the need to replace the card. The purpose of these actions is to enter the subscriber’s mobile personal account. To do this, the victim is asked for the SMS confirmation necessary for entering, which comes to the subscriber’s number, ”said one of Izvestia’s interlocutors.
In the personal account, the attackers set up forwarding SMS or calls from the victim’s number to their own – this allows them to receive authentication messages to confirm various kinds of operations, the source explained. For example, fraudsters can withdraw funds from a subscriber’s bank cards or issue a loan for him, he warned.
Moreover, scammers often force the victim to independently activate the call or SMS forwarding service from their mobile devices, the source added. To do this, during the conversation, the attackers ask you to dial the USSD command and the number to which calls and messages will be redirected.
