A French man, who was sentenced to 13 years in prison in 2014 for a series of rapes and assaults on underage girls on campsites in the Ardèche, committed another offense after his parole last year. It resulted in Sébastien Dutheil (42) a new prison sentence today.
The court in Carcassonne sentenced him to 11 years in prison for three sexual assaults against minors. They took place in February, March and July last year in the fortified city in southeastern France and in Limouxin, some 20 kilometers to the south. The victims were teenage girls whose genitals he touched by using force. The case was heard behind closed doors at the request of the victims’ lawyers because of the “traumatic experiences to say the least” of their clients.
The court described the repeat offender according to the regional newspaper L’Independant as ‘a sexual predator’, referring to his first suspended sentence to one year in prison for assault in 2000, a suspended sentence with probation in 2005 and his sentence to 13 years in prison in 2014. In the latter sentence, the court ruled that he had would be eligible for parole at the earliest after having served two-thirds of it and that he was required to undergo psychiatric treatment after release to prevent recidivism. The divorced roofer from the village of Brune near Privas in the Ardèche did not respect the latter condition. That’s why he ended up behind bars again last year.
DNA match
The serial rapist was caught in August 2012 after his DNA was found on the panties of an 11-year-old Dutch girl who had been raped two weeks earlier at a campsite in Saint-Didier-sous-Aubenas. She slept with a ten-year-old girl in a tent next to her parents’ caravan. When she started screaming, the perpetrator ran off.
The DNA match was possible because Dutheil, after his first conviction for sexual assault in 2000, had to hand over cell material to the French DNA bank. After the arrest of the thirty-year-old, his neighbors told French media that the police had discovered 1.5 years earlier that the man was downloading child pornography via the internet.
The then 32-year-old Frenchman was ultimately found to be responsible for two rapes and nine assaults or attempted assaults between 2010 and 2012 on campsites in the Ardèche. His victims were between the ages of 6 and 17. Among them also a 6-year-old girl from Germany and a few from France. Only after the rape of an 11-year-old Frenchwoman on August 8, 2012, did the police connect the events.
