Director of the French Institute of International and Strategic Relations Pascal Boniface on Monday, December 6, in an interview with Izvestia, explained why the idea of a country’s withdrawal from the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) is popular in France.
“The recent episode with AUKUS has reawakened French mistrust of the United States, while [президент США Джо] Biden wanted to be a hopeful partner after the episode with [предыдущим главой Белого дома Дональдом] Trump. And not only right-wing politicians (presidential candidates Eric Zemmour and Marine Le Pen), but also politicians from the left, such as Jean-Luc Melanchon, require leaving the integrated military bodies of NATO, ”he said.
According to the expert, the other sides were divided into those who are satisfied with the situation, and those who, in their opinion, while remaining members of the military, France should be more active in order to differ from the United States.
On the eve, at a pre-election rally in the suburbs of Paris, French presidential candidate Eric Zemmour said that he would withdraw the country from NATO if he becomes president. He also noted that the French should not be vassals of the European Union.
French journalist and writer Zemmour officially announced his candidacy for the presidential elections in France in April 2022 on November 30.
On September 15th, a trilateral security partnership – AUKUS – emerged through the signing of an agreement between representatives of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States. For the sake of new nuclear submarines from Washington and London, Canberra terminated an agreement with Paris for the supply of 12 attack submarines worth $ 66 billion and provoked a diplomatic scandal. At the same time, experts pointed out that the new alliance could be directed against China.
Australia’s decision was criticized in France. Secretary of State Clement Bon said that the entire EU is unlikely to continue to negotiate free trade with Australia after this erosion of trust in the relationship.
