New Delhi: A Delhi-based man suffering from a rare neurological disease is planning to travel to Switzerland to undergo euthanasia, but his friend has moved the court to deny him a visa. The Delhi-based man’s persistence and his friend’s struggle have gained attention.
Let us understand euthanasia: Euthanasia is the act of euthanizing patients who are seriously suffering from an illness and who are considered to have no chance of survival at the request of their relatives. Mercy killing has been divided into two categories: taking action and not taking action.
Taking action: Planning (injecting poison) by doctors or other persons (paramedics) to cause the patient to die. Failure to take action: Failure to do or stop doing what the patient needs to do to survive. Discontinue artificial respiration.
Delhi case: Such is the practice of euthanasia, a Delhi-based man has obtained a visa in Switzerland for planning to undergo euthanasia and seeking medical treatment. However, his friend has filed a petition in the Delhi High Court, claiming that he is going to subject himself to mercy killing in Switzerland.
In the petition, “My friend is suffering from Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. Since 2014, he has become a bed patient due to this disease. He can only walk a few steps indoors. My friend, in despair, plans to travel to Switzerland to undergo euthanasia. He has also made arrangements for it. However, while applying for a visa at the embassy here, he mentioned that he was going for medical treatment.
My friend has elderly parents. They are deeply saddened by their son’s decision. My friend was being treated in AIIMS before Corona. Since then he has been receiving treatment from home. He has no financial crunch to meet the medical expenses. Therefore, parents and friends want him to undergo medical treatment in India and try to improve his health. Therefore, I request that the immigration authorities should not approve his visa.”
The case is likely to be taken up for trial soon.
