The Scenic Fruit Company is removing its frozen strawberries from stores. These are sold in 18 US states at Aldi, Costco, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood and PCC Community Markets. The company is also recalling a frozen fruit mix it sells at Trader Joe’s. The reason is that strawberries are linked to an outbreak of Hepatitis A.
Scenic Fruit Company has already stopped producing and distributing the products to allow the FDA to investigate the contamination.
As of March 13, five cases of hepatitis A have been reported in Washington alone. The five people claimed to have eaten frozen organic strawberries, which gave a clue to the origin of the contagion.
So far no deaths have been reported, although two people have been hospitalized.
Contaminated strawberries are those with the expiration date on the packaging from April 25, 2024 to November 20, 2024.
The names of the possibly contaminated brands are:
–Simply Nature Organic Strawberries
–Vital Choice Organic Strawberries.
–Kirkland Signature Organic Strawberries
–Made With Organic Strawberries
–PCC Community Markets Organic Strawberries
–Trader Joe’s Organic Tropical Fruit Blend Pineapple, Bananas, Strawberries & Mango
Scenic Fruit Company and the FDA are asking people who bought the strawberries not to eat them and to return them to their store for a refund..
“Out of an abundance of caution, we are recalling frozen organic strawberries we receive from our supplier. The action comes after our supplier initiated a recall due to a possible link to frozen organic strawberries contaminated with the hepatitis A virus,” Maridean Eisele, president of Scenic Fruit Company, said in a statement sent to USA TODAY.
