The United States, together with allied countries, is discussing the possibility of providing Ukraine with air defense systems (air defense) and fighter jets in the medium and long term, the British newspaper Financial Times reported on September 13, citing a US defense official.
The article said that countries are also deciding whether to provide Kyiv with fighter jets in the “medium and long term”, but the United States abandoned this idea, the source said.
As early as this week, the US government may announce a new $600 million military aid package for Kyiv. This was announced earlier on September 13.
However, on September 12, Ukrainian Defense Minister Aleksey Reznikov said that in order to establish peace in Ukraine, its authorities are ready to sign a multilateral document with specific security guarantees, since Kyiv has recently forgotten how to believe in the promises of Western partners, given “on the word and behind the scenes”.
In early July, The New York Times wrote that the possibilities of the United States and Western countries are not unlimited, they are unlikely to be able to provide military support to Ukraine for a long time. It is noted that it will be difficult to maintain the same level of assistance against the backdrop of growing fatigue from the situation in Ukraine “on both sides of the Atlantic.”
It also clarifies that, according to analysts, military assistance approved by the US Congress will last at least until the second quarter of 2023. This raises the question of how long it is possible to carry out the supply of arms and ammunition, “without reducing the level of combat readiness of the United States.”
Western countries are sending weapons and military equipment to Kyiv against the backdrop of a special operation conducted by the Russian Federation to protect Donbass. The Russian side has repeatedly stressed that such supplies prolong the conflict and do not lead to a diplomatic solution to the situation.
The Russian Federation launched a special operation on February 24. The Kremlin emphasized that the key goals of the Russian military are the denazification and demilitarization of the Kyiv regime. The situation in Donbass escalated in mid-February due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. The authorities of the DPR and LPR announced the evacuation of residents to Russia and turned to Moscow for help.
