Goalkeeper Georgi Mamardashvili gave the Georgia national team a valuable point against the Czechs in a 1-1 draw at the Volkspark Stadium in Hamburg in the second round of the Group Six competitions of the European Football Cup 2024.
Mamardashvili excelled in stopping 11 shots on his own goal in a match in which the Czech team was the most dangerous and closest to winning in the group that includes Portugal and Turkey, who will meet later.
Georgia got the first point in its first ever participation in the tournament since the country gained its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, and it is also the first point for the Czechs in this participation.
The two teams entered the match with no score after losing in the first round, Georgia to Turkey 1-3, and the Czech Republic to Portugal 1-2, and therefore they were hoping to achieve victory to increase their chances of qualifying to the final 16.
