As of March, there were 411 Indians in jails in Qatar. In 2020, the emir pardoned 69 Indians. His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, also ordered the release of 439 prisoners. It is part of the UAE President’s humanitarian approach based on the values of patience and endurance.
He said the aim was to give prisoners the opportunity to change and start a new life, and that the practice of pardoning prisoners before the holy month also aims to strengthen family ties.

Sheikh Khalifa was succeeded by the ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed al-Qasimi also pardoned the prisoners. He released 206 prisoners. Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid, the ruler of Ajman, also announced the release of 55 prisoners. This is in view of their good conduct during their sentence. He said the prisoners were being released to help start a new life and alleviate the suffering of their families.
