Good news for HDFC customers; Now you can link RuPay credit cards with UPI

HDFC Bank has become the first private sector bank to offer customers the option to use their RuPay credit cards on the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). Till last year, UPI was linked to savings accounts where payments were debited. Henceforth, HDFC Bank RuPay credit cards can be linked with a UPI ID enabling the customer to use the credit card across popular payment platforms.

The bank’s payments country head Parag Rao said the move will give customers more convenience to make digital payments. “We believe linking RuPay Credit Card to UPI will transform the digital payments ecosystem. And encourage adoption of UPI across businesses with multiple use cases.” NPCI Chief Operating Officer Praveena Rai said.

From now on, HDFC Bank’s RuPay credit card holders can add their card details to a UPI app and select the account option while scanning the UPI QR code for payment. Days after Paytm announced that it has enabled merchants to accept credit card payments on UPIQR
Announcement by HDFC. Earlier, PNB, Union Bank and Indian Bank were the first to announce UPI enabled RuPay credit cards.

The National Payments Corporation of India has announced that no merchant will be charged for RuPay credit card transactions on UPI below Rs 2,000. This will encourage even merchants who don’t accept credit cards fearing the merchant discount rate to take up the RuPay credit card option.

HDFC said the service will be available to customers of other banks through an invite link during a four-month trial phase.
