Greater São Paulo and Vale do Paraíba are the regions of São Paulo that concentrated the highest number of dengue cases in January. Together, there were 8,701 diagnoses of the disease, equivalent to 45% of the cases registered across the state.
According to the government’s CVE (Epidemiological Surveillance Center), São Paulo had 18,734 cases of dengue by the end of the fourth epidemiological week of the year, ending on January 27th.
The DRS (Regional Health Department) of Greater São Paulo had 4,534 cases, while the DRS of Taubaté, which encompasses the 39 municipalities of Vale do Paraíba, had 4,167.
Vale do Paraíba was the region where the disease advanced the most compared to a similar period last year, when 279 diagnoses were confirmed – the increase was 1,394%. Taubaté (132 km from SP), for example, has already had 556 positive cases of dengue, while São José dos Campos (96 km from SP) has had 535.
In the same region, the situation in Pindamonhangaba (155 km from SP) is one of the most alarming. The city has already confirmed 1,930 cases of the disease.
The scenario in Jacareí (80 km from SP) is also of concern. Alone, the city of 235,000 inhabitants recorded 1,608 cases of dengue this year, two of which were fatal. The victims were two elderly men, aged 84 and 74.
On the 29th, Jacareí City Hall declared a state of emergency and sent a letter to the Ministry of Health requesting the city’s inclusion among the cities that will receive the dengue vaccine in February.
The vaccine will initially be made available to around 500 municipalities with high transmission of the disease and incidence of type 2 of the virus. The campaign’s target audience will be children and adolescents aged 10 to 14, the age group with the highest number of hospitalizations. For now, the 11 cities that make up the Alto Tietê region, east of Greater São Paulo, are the only ones in the state included on the Ministry of Health’s list.
The largest city in the interior, with 1.1 million inhabitants, Campinas registered 1,654 cases of dengue. The region’s DRS, which encompasses 41 other cities, was third in the state in terms of volume of disease confirmations: 2,147 as of January 27, an increase of 590% compared to the same period last year.
Next comes the Bauru region, with 2,126 dengue confirmations by DRS. The city of Botucatu (272 km from SP) concentrated a significant part of the incidents. There were 705 cases, compared to 6 in January last year. The municipality also declared an emergency situation and mobilized a task force to block breeding sites in the Aedes aegypti.
In the same region, Dois Córregos (263 km from SP), which has 27 thousand inhabitants, has already confirmed 472 cases and one death from the disease.
Asked about prevention actions, the Tarcísio de Freitas (Republican) administration said in a note that “CVE monitors the epidemiological scenario of reported and confirmed cases and also of the serotypes circulating in the state, in addition to permanently assisting actions to combat the mosquito that transmits arboviruses, providing technical support to municipalities, which are responsible for field work to prevent the disease”.
