The detention of the rector of the Kazan Federal University (KFU) Ilshat Gafurov became known on Wednesday, December 22. According to preliminary information, he was detained by officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the FSB in Kazan the day before, and then he was sent by plane to Moscow. Apparently, yesterday Ilshat Gafurov was still working at the university: he participated in an online seminar with the Belarusian State University.
According to an informed source of Izvestia, the investigation is being carried out by employees of the central office of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. Preliminarily, the measure of restraint for Gafurov will be determined by the Basmanny Court of Moscow today, according to a source.
Gafurov is suspected of involvement in the contract murder of the deputy of the Yelabuga United Council of People’s Deputies and businessman Aydar Israfilov, who is associated with one of the largest organized criminal groups of the nineties “29th complex”, says the source Izvestia. It was made in August 1999 – at that time the current rector of KFU was in charge of the administration of the city of Elabuga.
KFU Izvestia declined to comment on the detention of the rector, stressing that there is no official information on the case yet. The press service of the university only reported that the university continues to work as usual.

On October 19, the Tatarstan edition “BUSINESS Online” reported that the leader of the criminal group “29th complex” Adygan Salyakhov was transferred to the republic from the colony “Polar Owl” in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug a year ago. Salyakhov and 32 other members of the criminal group were sentenced in 2006 for 21 murders, seven abductions and other crimes for a total of 500 years in prison. The leader of the organized crime group received 25 years in prison.

He was shot in the parking lot near the capital’s sports complex CSKA – the command, as stated in the case, was given by Asadullin.
What is known about the rector of KFU
60-year-old Ilshat Gafurov is a candidate of physical and mathematical sciences and a doctor of economic sciences. He has been the rector of Kazan Federal University since 2010. Under him, seven institutes were included in the university, including TGSPU, KFEI and Yelabuga State Pedagogical University, where, after graduation, Gafurov himself was once an assistant at the Department of General Physics. Last year, by order of the chairman of the government, Gafurov was appointed rector for a third term.
