Ahmedabad: Elections for a total of 182 assembly constituencies in Gujarat will be held in two phases on December 1 and 5. According to Election Commission statistics, 1,621 candidates are in the fray. Only 139 of them are women. 56 are independents. Only 38 people belong to the 3 main political parties.
While 50 percent of Gujarat voters are women, the share of women candidates is 8.57%.
Out of the 1,828 candidates who contested the last 2017 elections, the share of women was 126. In this, only 13 people won, 9 from BJP and 4 from Congress. 104 people lost their deposits.
In the last 2017 elections, the BJP had fielded 18 women who had fielded 12 women. The Congress fielded 10 candidates in the last election and has now given a chance to 14 candidates. Most of the women candidates of both the parties are Dalit and tribal.
6 women candidates from Aam Aadmi Party contesting in all constituencies. 13 on behalf of Bahujan Samaj which is contesting in 101 constituencies. 2 women are contesting on behalf of AIMIM party which is contesting in only 13 constituencies.
