A shooting took place this Friday night outside the High Court of Islamabad, where it has been since this morning former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan, with no casualties reported at this time.
The shots were directed at security guards in various areas near the judicial complex, without anyone being injured, said the Police in the Pakistani capital without specifying in detail the origin or number of shooters. “The situation is being monitored,” he added in a brief statement in which he assured that he is investigating the incident.
The former prime minister, who this afternoon received a measure of bail for two weeks that released him after three days of arrest, is still inside the court awaiting security arrangements that allow him to return to his residence.
According to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the formation of the former prime minister explained that the security clearance has delayed Khan’s departure for the city of Lahore. A party spokesman, Farrukh Habib, said Khan’s personal security and his vehicle were not allowed to reach the Islamabad High Court to escort him. “There is an extraordinary delay (…) The fascist regime should not prevent the immediate departure of Imran Khan,” Habib added on Twitter.
The 70-year-old politician was arrested on May 9 for a corruption case when he went to the Islamabad High Court to request bail in connection with one of several cases against him. Khan was arrested for “the Qadir Trust case”, which accuses him of receiving land as a bribe through a fund set up by him and his wife for a university focused on spirituality and Islamic teachings.
His arrest led to a wave of violence that included attacks on military headquarters, state institutions and officers’ residences, resulting in eight deaths, hundreds injured and more than 1,600 arrested so far.
