The father of the young star of the Spanish national team and Barcelona, Lamine Jamal, was stabbed and was taken to the hospital in an advanced but stable condition, according to what the Spanish newspaper “La Vanguardia” reported late Wednesday.
Mounir Nasraoui was stabbed several times in a parking lot in Mataró after an argument with some men while walking his dog, the report said, citing “official sources familiar with the incident.”
Catalan police said three people had been arrested in connection with the stabbing and were currently under investigation at a police station in Mataró.
Police said investigators were looking to interview the victim “as soon as possible”, as well as witnesses, to uncover the circumstances of the attack.
La Vanguardia newspaper reported that more than one person was arrested in connection with the incident, while the search continues for a fourth person involved.
The attack took place in the Rocafunda neighbourhood of Mataró, about 30 kilometres north of Barcelona, where Jamal grew up and where his father and grandmother still live. The report said the attack followed a street altercation between several men and Jamal’s father, who then returned to assault him.
The 17-year-old celebrates scoring goals by making a hand gesture indicating the number “304”, in reference to the postal code of the Catalan neighborhood.
Jamal made his professional debut with Barcelona at the age of 15, and quickly established himself on the international stage by helping Spain win the Euro 2024 title this summer.
