The headquarters of the territorial defense of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) on Tuesday, January 17, confirmed the liberation of Soledar by Russian forces.
“As of January 17, 2023, Russian troops liberated Soledar on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic,” the headquarters’ Telegram channel says.
On January 15, the ranks of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) recognized the loss of Soledar. In particular, this was reported by the Ukrainian commander with the call sign Magyar.
On the same day, Wagner PMC employees showed the liberated Soledar to the Izvestia film crew and talked about the battles with the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to them, the onslaught of Russian forces was especially heavy and the Ukrainian army had to retreat.
The operation of the Russian troops to liberate the city ended on the evening of January 12. The day before, the founder of Wagner PMC, businessman Yevgeny Prigozhin, said that Soledar had been completely liberated from Ukrainian nationalists and that Russian military personnel had begun cleaning up the mines.
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
