The baby, who did not know that his mother had died, was trying to wake him up. After the formalities were completed by the police, the body was shifted to the mortuary. Shabana (20), a married woman from Nagarfort near Ninewa, died while undergoing treatment at the hospital last Saturday. However, the police said that the exact disease that she had contracted was not known and the family members did not agree to conduct the post-mortem.
Shabana’s brother Salim said that his sister had stomach pain last Saturday and was ready to go to Kota for treatment. Shabana’s condition worsened when she came from Nagarfort to Ninewa by auto and was waiting to take a bus to Kota. He said that he was taken to the local community health center. Ninewa police were informed by the doctors after he died within a few hours of going to the health center. A constable reached there and told him to file a complaint with the Nagarfort police. Moreover, he suggested that the dead body should be taken out only after the arrival of the police from that station.
Shabana’s body was placed on the same bed on the instructions of the police and covered with a sheet. No matter how much the family members and other patients there begged the Ninewa police constable to take the body to the morgue, he said no. The body was taken out after Nagarfort police arrived there at 6.30 pm. Postmortem was conducted after her husband came from Haryana yesterday. He did not give consent as the cause of death was medical.
It is learned that the assistant sub-inspector of Ninewa station called the station in Nagarfort about Shabana’s death around 2.30 pm. As no one came till 5 pm, higher authorities were contacted and Nagarfort Police Station In-charge Prabhusingh reached the hospital at 6.30 pm.
Prabhu Singh said that he was informed at 3.30 but could not come as the vehicle was not available. He said that if a woman dies within seven years of marriage, the consent of her parents and husband’s family is required to take any action. He explained that as Shabana got married less than four years ago, the permission of both the families was required.
Ninewa Health Center in-charge Samudra Lal Meena said that the body was kept in the ward as the consent of the family members was required before it was taken to the mortuary. Also, Shabana from Nagarfort town was given in marriage to a man from Rewari in Haryana. They have two children, a baby and a baby boy.
