In a historic achievement for Emirati karate, the player Sarah Al Ameri won the gold medal yesterday in the women’s individual kumite competition in the weight of 61 kg in the competitions of the Asian Championship, which was held in the Kazakh capital Almaty from 18 to 22 December.
This gold is the first in the history of Emirati karate in the women’s singles category at the continental level. This is also the second medal for Sarah Al-Amiri in the championship after she won the bronze medal in the 61kg kumite competition in the under-21 category.
The women’s team, consisting of players Hawra Al-Ajmi, Fatima Khaseef, Sarah Al-Amiri and Al-Yazia Khaled, achieved second place and silver medals in the collective kumite competition. In the men’s kumite individual competitions, the player Suleiman Al Mal won the bronze medal.
At the end of the tournament, the national karate team will have 7 medals, one gold, 4 silver and two bronze, which is a distinctive outcome that reflects the development of the game in the UAE and its rapid rise at the continental level.
The President of the UAE and Asian Karate Federations, First Vice-President of the International Federation, Major General M Nasser Abdul Razzaq Al Razoqi, praised the continental achievements, expressing his conviction that such results are enough to be a positive indicator for the future, and a great motivation to achieve more achievements.
For his part, the Vice President of the Asian Karate Confederation Rashid Al Ali expressed his happiness with the achievement of the mission, congratulating the players for excellence and creativity in that tournament, noting that the achievements being achieved at the present time are only a natural result of sound planning, and the cumulative, diligent and thoughtful work of the Board of Directors. The federation that raises the slogan of the spirit of one team, and unites the efforts of its members to serve the game and provide the best environment for male and female players in the country.
For his part, the Secretary-General of the Arab Karate Federation, Engineer Hamid Shamis, praised the efforts of the players in the tournament, expressing his pride in the achievement of the UAE at the level of the Asian continent.
The mission will return to the Emirates tomorrow morning. A great reception will be given to it at Dubai Airport by sports officials, karate lovers and parents of the players.
