PODCASTOne evening in a holiday home, a 46-year-old mother writes a farewell letter. She then squeezes dozens of pills from the strips and puts them into two drinks. She gives one to her 10-year-old son, the other she drinks herself. If he finishes the drink, they’ll go to Starbucks the next day, she promises. But that will never happen.
If the mother and her son do not show up for an appointment the next day, the family goes to the chalet. They find the boy half under the bed: he is breathing strangely and cannot speak. A few days later, he is still having hallucinations.
In the lawsuit, the mother talks about her depression and intense fears. Her husband wanted a divorce, but an end to her life and that of her son? No, she never wanted that.
Reporter Bart Lelieveld was at the case and will talk to presenter Thomas Brouwer. “The boy was adopted and then his mother tries to kill him. The boy wonders what’s wrong with him, then you break when you hear questions like that.’
