The celebration took place on the morning show ‘Up my people’, where Maju is the main driver. On this special occasion, Mantilla surprised the audience by wearing the emblematic turquoise dress that made her shine two decades ago, evoking indelible memories of that historic triumph.
“I appreciate your words, your affection and the time you dedicate to me remembering this very special moment, for allowing me to travel in time and land at that moment when I am crowned. Good moments make people happy and they are making me very happy remembering this special moment for the country and for me,” said Maju Mantilla this Wednesday, December 4.
Maju Mantilla’s difficult moment at Miss World
During the broadcast, the beauty queen shared unpublished details of her experience in the international pageant. When asked about the most challenging moment of her participation, Maju revealed: “It was the moment of the personal interview, I got nervous and at that moment my English was not so fluent and it was one of the cons that I had. I felt that the answer did not go well because I had to give it in English. I came out thinking and said I didn’t do it the way I wanted. I cried, I felt bad and it was frustrating because I said I don’t know if I managed to answer what they asked me speaking in English.”
Reflecting on what she would say to her self from two decades ago, Maju expressed: “That he did well despite his fears, despite the fact that many times your mind blocks you. It was a commitment to myself, to challenge myself and to show that Maju is not only going to be on a catwalk, but that she is going to go further.”
Maju Mantilla made history at Miss World
On December 4, 2004, at the Beauty Crown Theater in Sanya, China, Maju Mantilla, then a 20-year-old girl from Trujillo, won the title of Miss World, becoming the second Peruvian to obtain this award, after Madeline Hartog-Bel in 1967. Her victory was especially significant, as it was the first time the pageant allowed a global audience to vote via the internet and text messages, reflecting the massive support he received.
During the pageant, Maju stood out not only for her beauty, but also for her talent and sports skills. She participated in the talent competition with a performance of the marinera norteña, a traditional Peruvian dance, and tied for third place in the sports competition, demonstrating her versatility and commitment. Her coronation was a moment of national joy, where thousands of Peruvians celebrated in the streets, and Mantilla was received as a heroine upon her return to the country.
