Iga Świątek she defeated Ons Jabeur in two sets and with three wins she confidently advanced to the semi-finals of the WTA Finals 2023, where she will face Aryna Sabalenka. After the competition between the Pole and the Tunisian, as usual, several interesting facts appeared, recorded on the twitter.com platform by the tennis account of Opta, a company dealing with sports statistics.
The most important issue is our compatriot’s personal record – this year she has already won 66 matches, never before having achieved such a level. The last player at the “66+” level was Serena Williams in 2013 (79 wins). It is in second place in this year’s ranking Jessica Pegula (56), in third place Aryna Sabalenka (55), and on the fourth Coco Gauff (50).
WTA Finals 2023. Iga Świątek joined Sharapova, Serena Williams and Svitolina
The remaining two interesting facts concern the results themselves WTA Finals, which since 2003 have moved from a 16-player bracket format to two groups of four players each. It was the fourth time since then that anyone had won all of the tournament’s group matches for two years in a row. This year, the Pole defeated Jabeur, Marketa Vondrousova and Coco Gauff, and last year she defeated Daria Kasatkina, Carolina Garcia and also Gauff.
Previously, only Maria Sharapova (2006-07), Serena Williams (2012-13) and Elina Svitolina (2018-19) achieved this feat. “Top,” Opta said briefly.
Świątek just advanced to the semifinals, doing so with the third fewest games conceded along the way. She gave away fourteen of them. Last year there were thirteen of them, and it remains the leader of this ranking Justine Henin, who defended her title in 2007. She lost only eleven games in the group. Back then, she competed with Anna Czekvetadze, Jelena Janković and Marion Bartoli.
