New Delhi. IIT Madras has developed a non-surgical device to measure the health of blood vessels and understand the effects of age. This will make early detection of heart diseases very easy. This device called ‘ArtSense’ is made in such a way that even those who are not experts can easily use it for general medical check-up to know the health of blood vessels.
Based on the report of this device patients can be advised to be cautious in future. The device consists of a proprietary non-imaging probe and an intelligent computing platform and has been developed by the Healthcare Technology Innovation Center (HTIC) of IIT Madras.
According to IIT Madras, the device has been tested on more than 5,000 humans. The technology has five utility patents, 10 design patents in the US, EU and India, and 28 patents pending in various jurisdictions.
IIT says the product is ready for technology transfer and commercialization after extensive testing. The IIT Madras team aims to conduct over one lakh vascular screenings annually using this.
Results from the technology and scope of this instrument have so far appeared in more than 100 scientific peer-reviewed publications. The latest research paper was published in a prestigious, peer-reviewed Journal of Hypertension and American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology.
Explaining the specialty of ‘ArtSense’, Dr. Jayaraj Joseph, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras, said, “It takes the required measurement and gives accurate results with a completely non-surgical procedure.” With the help of ArtSense, the age of blood vessels can be easily estimated for a large population. Especially it will be possible both in the clinic and in other places such as gyms and general health centers.
Clinical studies for ArtSense have been approved in India, the US and Europe. A large clinical study is underway at AIIMS New Delhi. Scientists at Radboud University Medical Center in the Netherlands are using this device to understand the relationship between aging of arteries, physical exertion (lack of activity) and heart diseases, and researchers at AIIMS New Delhi are using it to study the aging of arteries in various diseases. Engaged in studying and understanding the physiological basis of growing up.
Collaborating in this project was Prof. We have used the ArtSense device on more than 600 human participants in recent clinical studies, said Dick Thijssen, Radboud UMC, The Netherlands, explaining the clinical utility of the device. This portable device is easy to use. With the help of this very comprehensive research study can get accurate information about the aging of blood vessels. This device, which can easily detect the health of blood vessels, will simplify clinical work and can be adopted on a large scale.
Dr. Mohanshankar Sivaprakasam, faculty in-charge of HTIC at IIT Madras said, ArtSense is portable and easy to use. The biggest thing is that it is indigenous and now it is getting recognition all over the world. This makes it likely that the device will be cheaper and ensure more people get tested. This marks the beginning of a new era for the organizations and individuals engaged in the prevention of diseases in their early stages.
