In January 2023, the Russian market for new electric cars grew by 30%, and Russian residents purchased 359 new electric cars. This was reported on February 9 by the Avtostat agency.
Experts estimate that about a quarter (24%) of all new electric cars purchased in January 2023 were from the German brand Volkswagen, which corresponds to 86 units. The same market volumes were recorded for the domestic brand Evolute and the American Tesla, 62 cars each. The top 5 also includes Chinese Voyah (25 electric cars) and BYD (20 cars).
In the model rating, the Volkswagen representative is also in the lead – the ID.4 electric crossover (56 cars). The Evolute i-PRO sedan was a little behind with the result of 53 purchased electric cars. Then Tesla Model Y (42 cars), Volkswagen ID.6 (30 electric cars) and Voyah Free (24 electric SUVs) settled down.
In this regard, experts noted that, in addition to Tesla, the remaining four electric models are new on the Russian market of electric vehicles. Many of them appeared on the market quite recently: the production of Russian Evolute electric cars started in the fall of 2022, and foreign cars come mainly from China or through parallel imports.
The experts recalled that although the result of January this year was more successful than January 2022, the most successful season for the purchase of new electric cars in Russia remains December 2021, when 528 new electric cars were sold.
On February 8, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin announced that he intends to transfer all metropolitan services to electric vehicles. According to the mayor, today 80% of passenger traffic in the city is carried out by electric transport. The remaining buses with internal combustion engines will also be gradually transferred to electric traction, and in the future we will gradually transfer all city services to electric vehicles, Sobyanin said. In the electrification of transport, the city authorities plan to work with taxi companies so that taxis in Moscow also switch to electric traction.
